Marquee Hire for Graduation Parties
What you need to know about hiring a marquee for a graduation celebration in the UK.
Graduation season timing
Most UK university graduations fall in June and July, right in the middle of peak marquee season. School leavers and sixth form celebrations tend to cluster in late June. If you know your date, get your marquee booked 8-12 weeks ahead. Waiting until May for a late-June party means limited availability and possible rush charges.
Weekday ceremonies give you a scheduling advantage. A Thursday graduation with a garden party the same evening is easier to book than a Saturday in peak season.
What size marquee for a graduation party?
Graduation parties are usually informal — guests standing, eating from a buffet, moving between the marquee and garden. That means you need less space per person than a seated dinner.
| Guest Count | Standing / Cocktail | Buffet + Seating |
|---|---|---|
| 50 | 6m x 6m | 6m x 12m |
| 75 | 6m x 9m | 9m x 12m |
| 100 | 6m x 12m | 9m x 15m |
| 150 | 9m x 12m | 12m x 18m |
Add space for a buffet table, a drinks station and any photo area. A DJ or speaker setup takes roughly 3-5 sqm.
Best marquee types for grad parties
Traditional pole marquee
The standard choice for garden graduation parties. Affordable, widely available, and works on any lawn. A 6m x 12m traditional marquee for 80-100 standing guests costs £400-£1,200 to hire.
Stretch tent
Freeform and modern. Pegs into grass, wraps around trees and garden features. Popular with younger graduates who want a festival feel. £600-£1,800 for a similar capacity.
Clearspan / frame marquee
No internal poles means full use of the floor space. Works on patios and hard standing as well as grass. Costs more — £800-£2,500 — but the clean interior suits formal events.
Garden setup
Most graduation marquees go up in a back garden. Before booking, measure your usable space and check for these:
- Flat ground. Slopes over 75-100mm across the footprint need levelling or a different spot. Suppliers can adjust leg heights on frame marquees for minor slopes.
- Overhead clearance. No tree branches within the marquee footprint. Overhanging branches at the edges are fine, but anything inside needs trimming.
- Access for delivery. The truck needs to get within 30 metres of the setup area. Measure side gates, driveways and any narrow passages. A typical marquee delivery vehicle is 2.5m wide.
- Underground services. Guy ropes and stakes go 1-1.5 metres into the ground. Check for drainage pipes, gas lines, electric cables and septic tanks. Your supplier should ask about these.
- Power. If you need lighting or a speaker, confirm you have an outdoor socket within reach. Long extension leads lose voltage — keep runs under 25 metres if possible.
Catering under a marquee
Graduation food is almost always a buffet. Set tables along one side of the marquee or in the centre, with a one-directional flow so guests aren't doubling back. A standard 6ft trestle table serves 8-10 people buffet-style.
- Hot food needs either electricity (chafing dishes, warming trays) or sterno. Sterno is easier — no extension leads, no trip hazard.
- A separate drinks station on the opposite side of the marquee keeps the buffet line moving.
- If you hire a caterer, they may bring their own tables. Confirm with both the caterer and marquee supplier so you don't double-order.
- In direct sun a marquee without walls heats up quickly. Open sides give airflow. For June and July dates, that's usually enough — but a warm day can catch you out.
University ceremony vs home party
Some families host a party at the university or a hired venue straight after the ceremony. Others throw a garden party later the same day or the following weekend.
- Same-day garden party: The marquee should be erected the day before. Guests arrive 2-3 hours after the ceremony, giving you time to get food ready. Confirm delivery timing with your supplier.
- Weekend party: More scheduling flexibility. Some suppliers offer self-collection on smaller marquees, which saves on delivery fees.
- Hired venue or park: Check if you need permission. Most councils require notice for marquees in public parks. Some university grounds won't allow staked marquees — you'll need a frame marquee with weights.
Typical costs
Graduation party marquees are smaller and simpler than wedding marquees, so costs are lower. Structure hire only, including delivery and erection:
| Setup | Marquee Size | Cost Range |
|---|---|---|
| Small (30-50 guests) | 6m x 6m or 6m x 9m | £200-£600 |
| Medium (50-100 guests) | 6m x 12m or 9m x 12m | £400-£1,200 |
| Large (100-150 guests) | 9m x 15m or 12m x 18m | £800-£2,500 |
Tables and chairs add £3-£8 per guest. Sidewalls run £1-£3 per linear metre. Festoon lighting is £50-£150 per strand. Flooring adds £15-£30 per sqm if you need it.
